Nick Rippole’s two-run triple highlighted an eight-run fifth inning that helped Our Lady of the Sacred Heart post a 14-0 victory over visiting Springdale Tuesday in a Class 2A Section 3 baseball game.
Dean Douglass allowed just one hit in the five-inning game – a single by Jackson Loebig with two outs in the fifth inning. Loebig was caught stealing moments later, meaning that Douglass faced the minimum 15 batters in the game. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
OLSH scored once in the second inning, added three more in the third and then tacked on two more in the fourth before the fifth-inning explosion. Chad Minton’s single drove in two runs in the third and Minton and Thomas Medwig each had RBI hits in the fourth.
In the fifth, Bruno Williams doubled home a run, and the Chargers got RBI singles from Ryan DeNinno, Medwig and Minton.
Medwig went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for OLSH, which outhit Springdale 15-1. Minton finished with three hits and four RBIs while Anthony Hansen had two hits and two RBIs.
Montour vs. Baldwin
Andrew Porto smacked a two-run homer and Dalton Young contributed a two-run double as the Spartans used a five-run third inning to build an 8-2 lead before weather issues forced the suspension of the Class 5A Section 4 game in the fifth inning.
The Spartans entered the third inning locked in a 1-1 tie before Zander Stern’s RBI single snapped that tie and gave Montour a 2-1 lead. Young followed with his two-run double and Porto delivered a two-run homer to make it 6-1.
The game will be resumed at 4 p.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.
Serra Catholic vs. Bishop Canevin
The visiting Eagles were leading 5-3 when the game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning due to inclement weather. It will be resumed at a time and date to be determined.
Bishop Canevin spotted the visitors three runs in the top of the first inning but came right back with three of its own to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.
Tyler Maddix’s base hit resulted in one run and Kellen Andruscik followed with a two-run double to even the score.
Serra Catholic untied the game in the top of the second with two runs on an RBI single and a wild pitch.
South Side vs. Carlynton
The Rams bolted out of the gate with a five-run first inning, and they held a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of the Class 2A Section 3 game when play was halted due to weather issues.
South Side took advantage of two errors, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch in the first inning, and the Rams also got an RBI double from Andrew Madeja.
SOFTBALL
Chartiers Valley vs. Montour
The host Colts were leading the Spartans 13-0 in the top of the fourth inning of this Class 5A Section 3 game when it was suspended due to inclement weather.
The game will be continued at a time/date to be determined.
Delaney O’Connor slugged a two-run homer and a two-run double, the latter of which came in a six-run third inning as the Colts extended a 7-0 lead to 13-0.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart vs. Fort Cherry
Mya Eshenbaugh had two hits, scored once and drove in a run and Ava Ciummo added two hits and two runs scored as the Chargers built a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when the Class 2A Section 3 game was halted due to inclement weather.
OLSH scored one run in each of the first two innings, with Eshenbaugh delivering a sacrifice fly in the first and the second run scoring on a fielder’s choice.
Claire Bulls delivered a two-run triple to highlight a three-run third-inning rally for OLSH.
TRACK AND FIELD
The initial round of the WPIAL Track and Field Championships, which was scheduled to take place Tuesday, was postponed until Wednesday due to weather concerns.
Three West Hills schools are participating – both the Moon boys and girls teams are competing in Class 3A and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Carlynton both are ready for Class 2A girls competition.
The Moon boys team, which won the Section 7 title, will battle Butler, Kiski Area and Penn-Trafford at 3 p.m. at Butler High School in one of four semifinal meets in that class.
On the girls side, the Tigers will meet Butler, Kiski Area, Belle Vernon and Beaver at 3 p.m. at Butler.
OLSH, the Section 2 champ, will compete against North Catholic, Shady Side Academy and host Shenango in a meet that starts at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Carlynton, which won the Section 5 title, will take on Freeport, Southmoreland and host California at 3 p.m.
BOYS TENNIS
WPIAL Team Championships
Both West Hills entrants in the Class 2A portion of the tournament – Montour and Carlynton – were eliminated in Tuesday’s first-round action.
Montour, the No. 11 seed, lost 3-1 to No. 6 seed Hampton. The final match was not played due to incoming inclement weather.
Carlynton, seeded No. 15, lost to No. 2 seed Valley, 5-0.
The day was hardly a total loss for Montour’s contingent, however. Coach Eric D’Antonoio said that on the way home, team members rolled up their sleeves and helped move some trees that had fallen during Tuesday’s storm and were blocking the road.
“We cleared a road with the Hampton Township workers so cars could pass and we could get home,” D’Antonio said.
“An admirable effort on and off the court. The boys did a great job of stepping up for total strangers.”
