High school basketball: Montour, OLSH, Bishop Canevin boys continue winning ways

First-place Montour had four players score in double figures, led by Colton Straight’s 21 points, and the Spartans overpowered Blackhawk, 79-39, Friday night in a Class 5A Section 4 boys basketball game.

Montour jumped to a 24-9 lead after one quarter and put even more distance between itself and Blackhawk, outscoring the Cougars 23-13 in the second quarter to take a 47-22 halftime lead.

Straight scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half for Montour, which improved to 14-1 overall and 9-0 in section play.

Kaleb Platz drained five 3-pointers on the way to 19 points, and Ama Sow contributed 16 points in the win. Mark Carter scored 10 points for the Spartans, with nine of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Carson Heckathorn and Justin Shanor each scored 13 points in the loss for Blackhawk.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 70, Union 59

Tiernan McCullough connected on four 3-pointers on the way to team-high 18 points as the Chargers overpowered the Scotties in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 4 matchup at Union.

OLSH bolted out of the gates to score 25 points in the first quarter and followed that with a 19-point output in the second period to take a 44-32 lead at intermission.

McCullough scored 15 of his 18 points in the opening two quarters. Jake Johnston contributed 16 points for the Chargers, with 12 of them coming on 3-pointers.

Vann Kavals scored eight of his 12 points in the first half for the winners, who improved to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in section play.


Bishop Canevin 59, Washington 40

Drew Allen scored a game-high 21 points to help the Crusaders cruise past the visiting Little Prexies in a Class 3A Section 2 matchup.

Bishop Canevin, which improved to 8-8 overall and 6-0 in section play, wasted no time getting untracked, building a 21-12 first-quarter lead. After Washington played the Crusaders evenly through the second quarter, Bishop Canevin put the game away by outscoring the Little Prexies 21-13 in the third quarter.

Allen scored 11 of his 21 points in that pivotal third quarter for Bishop Canevin. Jackson Maddix added 16 points for the winners, with seven of them coming in the opening quarter.


Chartiers Valley 57, Moon 52

Lucas Federico scored 19 points to lead Chartiers Valley to a Class 5A Section 4 victory over the visiting Tigers.

The game, which pitted two of the top teams in the section, was tight throughout. Chartiers Valley, which also got 12 points from Jayden Davis, led by four points, 31-27, at halftime, and Moon trimmed the deficit to 42-40 heading into the final eight minutes.

Chartiers Valley, which improved to 15-2 overall and 7-2 in the section – with both losses coming to Montour, outscored the Tigers 15-12 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Moon coach Gino Palmosina said his team didn’t take care of the ball well enough to win the game.

“Give credit to Chartiers Valley for speeding us up at times,” Palmosina said.

Carter Tumulty led Moon with 21 points and Michael Santicola contributed 20. The Tigers fell to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in section play.

McGuffey 67, Carlynton 39

Ayden Cunningham poured in 31 points, including 13 in the third quarter, to pace the Highlanders past the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 2 game.

After a close first quarter that saw McGuffey post an 18-14 lead, the Highlanders outscored Carlynton 15-6 in the second quarter to build a 33-20 halftime lead.

McGuffey continued to lengthen its lead, hitting for 18 third-quarter points to nine for Carlynton, and that sealed the win.

Sam Sout added 13 points for the winners. Devonte Dean was the only player to score in double figures for Carlynton, and he finished with 10. The Cougars fell to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in section play.


Beaver County Christian 52, Cornell 47

Hunter Mozley hit for 19 points and Tyler Guevara added 12 to help the Eagles edge the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 matchup at Beaver Falls.

Cornell trailed just 12-10 after one quarter, but Beaver County Christian outscored the visitors 18-4 in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.

Mozley scored seven of his 19 points in the second quarter to help build his team’s 30-14 halftime lead.

“We had some missed opportunities in that quarter, and (Beaver County Christian) capitalized on them,” Cornell coach Brian Bethel said afterward.

Eduardo Benitez led Cornell with 16 points and Terrance Collington added 13.

The loss dropped Cornell’s record to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in section play.


Keystone Oaks 67, Sto-Rox 35

Carmen Pellarin scored a game-high 22 points and the Eagles outscored the Vikings 40-15 in the middle two quarters to post an easy win in a Class 3A Section 2 game at Keystone Oaks.

Sto-Rox trailed just 13-10 after one quarter, but Keystone Oaks used a 17-7 second-quarter edge to take a 30-17 halftime lead. The Eagles then put the game away by outscoring Sto-Rox 23-8 in the third quarter.

Joseph Colton scored 17 points for Keystone Oaks. Marcus Griffin and Javon Nelson each scored 10 points for Sto-Rox, which fell to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in section play.


GIRLS: South Fayette 79, Montour 33

Juliette Leroux and Lailah Wright scored 15 points apiece to spark the Lions to their 16th win in 17 starts.

South Fayette, which improved to 9-0 in Class 5A Section 3 play, rolled up 24 points in the first quarter and extended its 24-16 lead to 52-23 at halftime by lighting up the Spartans for 28 second-quarter points.

Haylie Lamonde added 14 points for South Fayette. Sienna Palmer scored 11 points to lead Montour, which fell to 7-10 overall and 2-7 in the section.


Chartiers Valley 44, Moon Area 33

The Colts rebounded from an eight-point first-quarter deficit by turning up the defensive heat in the second quarter, holding the Tigers scoreless while building a 19-15 halftime lead.

The game remained close through the third quarter before Chartiers Valley outscored Moon 14-7 in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Jaedin Griggs scored 12 points to lead Moon, which dropped to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in section play. Chartiers Valley improved to 12-6 overall and 8-1 in the section. Jayla Brown scored 10 in the loss for the Tigers.
