Jonah Camardese’s bid to claim a portion of two straight WPIAL doubles titles ended quickly Tuesday as he and partner Trey Varga of Montour were ousted in the opening round of the Class 2A Boys Tennis Doubles Championships at North Allegheny High School.
Camardese and Varga fell 10-5 to the No. 5 seed Will Meagher and Matthew Henry of Quaker Valley.
Camardese and Varga entered the tournament as the No. 12 team among 16 duos.
A year ago, Camardese teamed with John Rohrkaste to surprise the field and take home the title – the first tennis title of any kind in Montour history.
Camardese and Varga earned a berth in this week’s doubles tournament by finishing third in the Section 2 tournament.
Montour’s season will continue, as the Spartans will participate in the WPIAL Class 2A Team Championships, which will begin April 28.
The top four finishers in each of Class 2A’s four sections advance to the team tournament.
According to the WPIAL website, Montour owned a 5-1 record, good enough for second place in Section 2, as of April 15. The Spartans’ overall record at that time was 6-5.
The Team Championships matches will be held May 7 at the Janet L. Sanson Tennis Center at Washington & Jefferson College.
Sewickley Academy is the reigning Class 2A team champions after defeating Quaker Valley, 3-2, a year ago.
Montour’s Rohrkaste also will play in the PIAA singles tournament next month after placing third in the WPIAL tournament. The PIAA tournament will take place May 23-24 at Hershey Racquet Club.
