High school wrestling: Moon heads to WPIAL team tournament

The Moon Area Tigers will head to Shaler to take on Peters Township at 6 p.m. Monday in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class 3A Wrestling Team Championships.

Moon, which finished second in Section 1 behind West Allegheny, and Peters Township – the runner-up in Section 3 – will battle for the right to take on undefeated Section 9 champion Franklin Regional in the first round, which will take place Wednesday at Franklin Regional.

Moon finished 2-1 in section meets, losing 33-29 to West Allegheny on Jan. 22. Peters Township went 3-1 in Section 3, losing only to section champion Bethel Park, 54-18.

Moon participated in the Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School Friday and Saturday, finishing sixth among 42 schools.

Cael Yanek captured first place in the 133-pound weight class, edging Emmett Wolfe of McGuffey, 9-8, in the championship match.

Yanek defeated Caleb Anderson, 20-1, in the semifinals after decisioning Jacob Wright of Trinity, 19-14, in the quarterfinals.

Five other Moon wrestlers placed among the top eight. Liam Costa wound up third at 160, Michael Olszewski placed fifth at 172, Bryce Thomas wound up seventh at 107, Elijah Thomas finished seventh at 145 and Khalil Razipor came in eighth at 215.
