High school wrestling: Moon, Carlynton suffer close setbacks

The Moon Area wrestling team got off to a fast start in its dual meet with West Allegheny Wednesday night, but the Indians rallied to pull out a 33-29 victory in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 dual meet at Moon.

West Allegheny spotted Moon a 20-3 lead, as the Tigers won four of the first five matches. After dropping the opening match of the night at 152 pounds, Moon reeled off four straight wins, starting with Tavis Lindsay’s win by major decision over Graysen Gardner, 10-1, at 160 pounds.

Liam Costa followed with a pin of Jayce Stanton at 3 minutes, 19 seconds, of their match at 172. Michael Olszewski of Moon then won by major decision over Cameron Simon, 11-2, at 189, and at 215, Thaddeus Novak pinned Teagan Gates at 4:34 to give Moon a 20-3 lead.

But West Allegheny responded by winning the next five matches to build a 29-20 lead.

Cael Yanek stopped the bleeding for the Tigers by decisioning AJ Snatchko, 6-2, at 133 pounds, cutting West Allegheny’s lead to 29-23. But the Indians put the match away when Logan Slovick posted a major decision over Brayden Tooch at 139 pounds.

Moon collected a forfeit win in the final match of the night, but that still left the Tigers four points short.


Avonworth 32, Carlynton 30

Ethan Moldovan and Leland Ferris collected wins by pin, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars fell to the Antelopes in a Class 2A Section 6 dual meet at Carlynton.

Moldovan won by fall over Michael Tabano at 5:20 of their 133-pound match. At 139, Ferris stopped Zach Konieczki at 3:02

Two Carlynton wrestlers posted wins by decision. Aaryn Edwards claimed a win by sudden victory, 9-6, over Gavin McDowell at 160.

At 215, Braiden Sudor blanked Justin Beck, 5-0.

Jermell Lindsay (172) and Henry Barbisch (285) won by forfeit for the Cougars, who fell to 0-3 in section dual meets.


Montour 54, Blackhawk 15

Four Spartans collected pins on the way to a dual meet victory over the Cougars.

Jacob Chacon stopped Bryson McGath at 1:45 of their match at 139 pounds and Danny Brandle pinned Dane Sherrill at 1:44 of their 145-pound battle. At 152, Montour’s Tom Cunningham needed 1:54 to pin Gavin Ronarcher.

Lucus Jenkins posted the Spartans’ final pin of the meet, stopping Dane Cos in just 30 seconds at 215.
