High school basketball: Bishop Canevin girls roll; Carlynton boys fall in PBC Hall of Fame Classic

Two Bishop Canevin players posted career-highs in scoring Saturday, leading the Crusaders to a 65-14 thrashing of Monessen in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 girls basketball game.

Kya Cooley scored a game- and career-high 23 points to pace the Crusaders, who got off to a 23-2 lead after one quarter and never were threatened thereafter.

Isabella Sysak contributed 19 points and 13 assists for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in section play.

Gianna Matthews chipped in with 10 points, also a career high, for the Crusaders.

Madison Johnson led Monessen with 10 points.

BOYS: Ellwood City 57, Carlynton 54

Devonte Dean scored 17 points to lead the Cougars, but poor free throw shooting proved too much for them to overcome in a non-section loss to the Wolverines in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at Ambridge.

Carlynton led 15-14 after one quarter, with Dean and Damien Holloway combining for 10 points, but Ellwood City gained the upper hand in the second quarter as Aaron Lake scored eight points to help stake the Wolverines to a 32-28 halftime lead.

Carlynton trimmed the deficit to just one point by the end of third quarter by outscoring Ellwood City 14-11. Julian Torres hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Cougars, but they missed 6 of 7 free throw attempts in that quarter.

Kaleb Servick scored seven fourth-quarter points for Ellwood City, which outscored Carlynton 14-12 in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Holloway and Dewayne Fisher each scored 10 points for Carlynton, which converted just 5 of 13 free throw attempts on the night and fell to 7-10 with the loss.

Servick paced Ellwood City with 17 points while Lake added 13 and Maykel Cuevas had 11.
