Maria Depner scored a game-high 18 points and Moon Area broke open a close girls basketball game by dominating in the final quarter on the way to a 40-24 win over host Union Wednesday night.
Moon, making its season debut, found itself deadlocked 18-18 at halftime, as the teams matched scoring in the first two quarters – 7 in the first and 11 in the second.
The Tigers outscored the Scotties 9-6 in the third quarter to take a 27-24 lead into the final quarter and then held Union scoreless while netting 13 points of their own to win going away.
Anya Schwartz added 10 points for Moon. Olivia Benedict led Union with 11 points.
Burgettstown 43, Bishop Canevin 27
Isabella Sysak scored 13 points, but a slow start doomed the Crusaders in a season-opening loss to the Blue Devils.
Bishop Canevin was held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 25-9 at halftime. The Crusaders, who also got 10 points from Kya Cooley, pulled to within eight points at one point in the second half, but they could get no closer.
Bishop Canevin was riddled with turnovers, finishing with 26. The Crusaders will play at 6 p.m. Thursday against Perry.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Freedom 66, Cornell 47
Chase Andrews scored 24 points for the Bulldogs, who pulled away in the second half to defeat the Raiders in their season opener.
Will Kumrow added 19 points and Malikhi Piersol finished with 11 for Freedom, which led 33-25 at halftime.
Eduardo Benitez scored 24 points to lead Cornell.
Upper St. Clair 75, Bishop Canevin 41
Ryan Robbins scored 18 points and the Panthers had five players score in double figures in cruising past the Crusaders.
Robbins, Jade Ausi and Jake Foster each scored six points to give Upper St. Clair an 18-9 first-quarter lead, and the Panthers went into halftime on top 33-24. The Panthers used a 19-8 third-quarter advantage to put the game away.
Drew Allen Jr. led Bishop Canevin with nine points while Jackson Maddix and Damar Olds each added eight.
WRESTLING
Moon Area 59, Quaker Valley 27
Four wrestlers – Brayden Tooch, Cael Yanek, David Barcaskey and Khalil Razipour — registered pins to pace the host Tigers past the Quakers in a nonsection meet.
Tooch stopped Quaker Valley’s Damien McClay at 1 minute, 37 seconds of their match at 133 pounds, and Yanek followed at 139 by pinning Brendan Fitzgerald at 1:52.
Barcaskey, wrestling at 215, stopped Sawyer Stelzig at 3:20 and Razipour, competing at 285, needed just 27 seconds to pin Angel Perez.
Two other Tigers won their matches by technical fall – Zachary Regotti stopped Harris Miller, 18-3 at 152 and Liam Costa defeated Tommy Minnoch 19-4 at 172.
Abdul Tabee (152) and Michael Olszewski (189) won by decision for Moon.
Montour 53, Hopewell 18
Jacob Chacon, Archie Collins and Lucus Jenkins all won by fall to spark the Spartans past the Vikings Wednesday night.
Chacon pinned Vincent Boris in 3 minutes, 49 seconds of their match at 145 pounds. Collins subdued Derrick Reilly in 5 seconds at 172 and Jenkins needed the same amount of time to stop Landon Matthews at 215.
Reese Lugaila, at 127, won by technical fall, 17-2 at 2:49 while Rook Smith won by technical fall at 152, 20-5, 5:018. Tom Cunningham (1602) won by major decision and Damon Nelson (121) won by decision for the Spartans.
