The spring sports schedule for West Hills area high school is underway, and several local teams already are making their marks.
In baseball, the Carlynton Cougars scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday to pull out an 8-7 victory over McKeesport.
The rally made a winner for the first time out of Carlynton pitcher Ray Filipovitz.
Filipovitz entered the game to pitch in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out. He struck out the first batter then induced the next batter to hit into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.
In the top of the seventh, Filipovitz retired the side in order, keeping the deficit at 7-3.
In the bottom of seventh, the Cougars managed to work three walks after two early outs, and Eric Firle and Isaac Anker delivered a pair of big hits to tie the game at 7-7.
Mason Mulligan then struck a hard-hit ball to shortstop, causing him to make an errant throw, and that gave Carlynton the win.
Anker drove in four runs on the day while Firle had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
BASEBALL
Carlynton
Despite chilly temperatures Monday, the Cougars had no trouble making contact as they rapped out 13 hits to post a 13-3 opening day win over Northgate. Connor Hart, Tyler Heinrich and Isaac Anker each contributed three hits. Heinrich led the way with five RBIs and Anker knocked in two. Nine different Cougars had a hit. Firle picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine batters in four innings.
In Wednesday’s game, Burgettstown pounded out an 18-0 win over the Cougars, who managed just two hits in the three-inning outing.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
The Chargers dropped a tough 8-7 decision to Quaker Valley Friday, as the Quakers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a come-from-behind win.
OLSH led 7-6 before Holden Kirkham’s RBI single tied the score in the seventh. After an out and a walk, Todd Kagle singled home the winning run.
Thomas Medwig had three hits for OLSH, which totaled 12 hits on the day. Sean Hudac had two hits and drove in two runs while Ryan DeNinno tripled, drove in three runs and scored twice. Iseia Fields-Schulz also scored a pair of runs and Anthony Hansen collected two hits.
On Tuesday, the Chargers fell 9-2 to Eden Christian Academy, as they managed just five hits in the loss. Colby Lane had two of the Chargers’ five hits and scored a run. Chad Minton had a hit and drove in two runs and Dean Douglass added a hit and scored once.
Hudac yielded five earned runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out three. Nick Rippole struck out two, walked two and gave up a hit in 1 1/3 innings.
The Chargers also split a doubleheader at the Serra Catholic Tournament on March 15, beating Greensburg Central Catholic, 5-4, in the opener and losing 9-4 to Serra Catholic in the nightcap.
RUGBY
Moon Area
The Tigers met with little resistance in blanking Hollidaysburg, 25-0, in their season opener earlier this week. Ellie Nurss posted two tries and was 3-for-3 on conversions, and Melissa Staaf added one try.
Contributing to the scores were Ava Steed, Hannah Wasnieski, Sam Orlando, Maria Depner and Reagan LaFayette.
SOFTBALL
Bishop Canevin
The Crusaders wound up on the short end of a 15-0 decision to Chartiers-Houston Wednesday, March 15. Bishop Canevin managed just one hit, which came off the bat of Alexis Summers.
Montour
The Spartans couldn’t keep up with Avonworth in a 12-2 loss. Shania Cope’s RBI single put Montour up 1-0 but the Antelopes answered with four in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed again. Gabby McDowell started on the mound for Montour and allowed seven hits and seven runs while striking out two and walking four in two innings.
Hailey Staub and Emily McClean each had two hits for Montour while Cope and Jade Schrenker each drove in a run.
Moon Area
In the Tigers’ most recent outing, they managed just five hits in a 9-3 loss to Plum
Pitcher Abbie Warnagaris was perfect in a game that went just three innings, as she struck out four and did not allow a hit or a walk as the Tigers pounded the Brearly School of New York, 17-0, Tuesday.
Danica Bacu had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two for Moon while Katherine DeMarco had a hit and an RBI while scoring three times. Alina McMahon also contributed a hit and two RBIs while scoring twice.
Earlier, the Tigers traveled to Florida for their spring training trip and defeated Flagler-Palm Coast 8-7 in the opening game. Warnagaris earned the win, striking out four through five innings. DeMarco earned the save while striking out five and not allowing a run.
Cameran Chambers had a triple and an inside-the-park home run, driving in two.
DeMarco and McMahon had multihit games and an RBI and Warnagaris also had two hits.
BOYS TENNIS
Carlynton
The Cougars opened their season March 10 with a 5-0 win over Ambridge and then fell 4-1 to Central Valley on March 12. Hayden Wertz and Hamza Alezzo posted a win at No. 1 doubles.
Moon
The Tigers opened their season March 11 with a 4-1 loss to Quaker Valley. Adam Jaszcar registered the only win for Moon in a 2 ½-hour match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
On March 12, the Tigers posted a 4-1 win over Bethel Park. Second singles Jaszcar, first doubles Shreya Kapoor and Jack Erhard and second doubles Sri Karthik Battu and Praytush Dhar combined to drop just three games. Senior captain Nolan Jaszcar fell to Devin Collier, one of the WPIAL’s top players, at No. 1 singles.
On March 13, Blackhawk edged Moon 3-2. Ben Talala and Adam Jaszcar both posted singles victories for the Tigers.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Montour
The Spartans dropped a 3-0 decision to Mars Thursday. Gaige Schoff led Montour with eight kills and two aces while Isaiah Henderson added six kills and three aces. Ben Slifkey contributed 22 assists.
Moon Area
In its most recent action, the Tigers fell in a four-set thriller to visiting Canon-McMillan Thursday, 27-25, 26-24, 22-25 and 29-27, that saw every contested set go to overtime.
Oliver Enos led with 23 kills, followed by Billy Sprott’s 15. Alex Weiss led with three blocks while Laercio Sousa and Hayden Dunn each had two. Defensive standouts were Logan Anderson-Stewart, Sprott and Enos.
The Tigers fell in four sets in their season opener to North Hills, 25-16, 21-25, 18-25, 25-16. Sprott paced the attack with 10 kills, followed by Enos with seven and Weiss with six. Dunn registered 15 digs to lead the way defensively and Anderson-Stewart contributed 26 assists.
Moon posted its first victory on March 17, defeating Hopewell 3-1. Sprott posted 19 kills, followed by Enos with 12 and Weiss with five. Enos also collected 22 digs and Anderson-Stewart added 13. Sprott also contributed four blocks.
On Wednesday, Moon fell 3-0 to Peters Township by scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-21. Sprott registered 11 kills and Enos had nine. Dunn finished with nine digs.
Moon also finished fifth at the Fox Chapel Classic last weekend.
