Vote for Roman: Support McKees Rocks K-9 in bid to land spot in law enforcement calendar

A K-9 with the McKees Rocks Police Department is in the running to appear on the 2027 Dogs of Law Enforcement calendar.

And area residents can help make that happen, as contest voting is now underway.

The local K-9 is Roman, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois.

Police patrolman Will Kelly said he’s happy that Roman is part of the competition.

“It’s just another way to get our name out there and Roman’s name out there,” Kelly said. “Ultimately, it helps us with fundraising and being able to keep the K-9 program going.”

Roman came from Mercer County’s Shallow Creek Kennels, a privately owned and operated importing and training facility for police service dogs.

A six-year veteran of the McKees Rocks police force, Kelly grew up around K-9 handlers. His uncle worked with two dogs in Charleston, W. Va.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and thankfully the borough and the chief and everyone were on board,” Kelly said.

It’s been over 20 years since McKees Rocks last had a police dog.

When Chief Richard Deliman received an email from the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial saying it was accepting pictures and short bios of K-9 officers to be included in the 2027 calendar, he sent in Roman’s photo and a short bio right away.

“This would be a very positive thing for the department,” Deliman said.

Founded in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is dedicated to honoring the fallen, telling the story of American law enforcement and making it safer for those who serve.

Roman, one of 22 finalists, is a dual-purpose dog, certified in narcotics detection, tracking and apprehension.

Kelly said he is proud of his partner and optimistic about his chances.

“I think he’ll do well,” Kelly said. “Looking at all the other dogs, they’re good-looking dogs, but I think Roman looks good in the picture.”

Deliman agreed. “I think he stands out,” he said. “Nothing against those other K-9s that he’s competing against.”

“We appreciate everyone’s support and donations and attention to Roman,” Kelly added.
