Drew Allen scored 12 of his game-high 27 points in the final quarter to help Bishop Canevin hold on for a 61-50 victory over Keystone Oaks Friday night in a key WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball contest at Bishop Canevin.
Allen’s 13 first-half points helped the Crusaders build a 31-25 lead at intermission, but he was held to two points in the third quarter.
Fortunately for Bishop Canevin, Jackson Maddix came alive and scored nine of his points in that quarter, helping the Crusaders expand their lead to 42-32 heading into the final quarter.
Eron Jakupi, who led Keystone Oaks with 25 points, tried to bring his team back in the last eight minutes, scoring 13 points, but Allen’s hot hand held off the Eagles.
Keystone Oaks lost for just the second time in 12 games overall and fell to 3-1 in the section. The Eagles are ranked No. 3 among Class 3A teams by TribLive and the Post-Gazette.
Raukeem Hawkins added 10 points for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 7-6 overall and 4-0 in section play.
Moon Area 58, West Allegheny 21
Jackson Bauman hit for a game-high 20 points and the Tigers used a fast start to take control in a Class 5A Section 4 win over the Indians.
Moon, ranked No. 4 among 5A schools by the Post-Gazette, outscored West Allegheny 18-4 in the opening quarter and widened its lead to 33-9 at halftime.
The Tigers improved to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the section with the win.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 57, Rochester 22
Frankie Igrec scored 14 points and 10 other Chargers scored at least two in a one-sided win over the Rams in a Class 2A Section 4 game at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
OLSH built a 16-7 first-quarter advantage and expanded that lead to 30-10 at halftime. The Chargers continued to widen the gap in the third quarter and led 49-16 heading into the final eight minutes.
Jake Johnson added 12 points for OLSH, including eight in the third quarter, as the Chargers improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in section play.
Thomas Jefferson 59, Montour 54
The Spartans gave the once-beaten Jaguars all they could handle but came up short in a Class 5A nonsection game at Thomas Jefferson.
Justin Fry scored 25 points and Nick Trklja finished with 22 for Thomas Jefferson, which improved to 12-1 overall and is ranked No. 2 among Class 5A schools by TribLive.
Brandon Bennett scored 26 points to lead Montour, which led 17-10 after one quarter and 28-27 at halftime. The two teams entered the final quarter tied 37-37, and the game remained deadlocked with 4 minutes to play when Montour’s 7-foot-1 Loic Kalau fouled out.
From that point on, the Jaguars made use of their size advantage, converting two offensive rebounds into points, and that proved to be the difference as they secured the win.
Montour fell to 4-8 overall with the loss.
Washington 56, Carlynton 49
Tristan Reed scored a game-high 18 points and a big second quarter proved to be pivotal in the Prexies’ Class 3A Section 2 win over the host Cougars.
Carlynton jumped to a 12-5 lead after one quarter, but Washington outscored the Cougars 19-7 in the second quarter to take a 24-19 lead at halftime. Seven players scored at least two points for the Prexies in that quarter.
Carlynton remained within striking distance in the final two quarters but could not pull out the win.
Mikey Jenkins led the Cougars with 15 points, eight of which came in the third quarter, and Ishaga Barre contributed 14 for Carlynton, which dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in section play.
McGuffey 52, Sto-Rox 45
Kolt McGowan poured in 25 points to lead the Highlanders past the visiting Vikings in a tight Class 3A Section 2 matchup.
Sam Stout added 11 points for McGuffey, which led 24-22 at halftime and 38-34 heading into the final quarter.
Marcus Griffin scored 13 points for Sto-Rox, which fell to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the section, and L.J. Washington added 11.
Nazareth Prep 67, Cornell 35
Ahsan Harrison totaled 30 points to spark the Saints to a Class 1A Section 1 victory over the Raiders.
Nazareth Prep led by just six points after one quarter but outscored Cornell 23-5 in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference.
Zach Frye added 13 points and Grey Wible 10 for the Saints.
Eduardo Benitez scored 20 points to lead Cornell, which dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in the section, and Zy’Air Dupree added 10.
