Three West Hills swimmers competed at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, with Cornell's Mimi Chamberlain winning a seventh-place medal in the 100 breaststroke. Fellow Cornell swimmer Noah Pickett placed first in the 500 freestyle B final, while Evey Fahnestock did not advance past preliminaries in the 100 breaststroke.
Haley Smarsh, a junior from Moon Area, celebrated her gold medal victory at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships, finishing the season with a 41-3 record. After two challenging years, her dedication and hard work in offseason training paid off, establishing her as a top contender in wrestling.
Riley’s Pour House is set to rebuild after a devastating fire in 2024. Community support is strong, with events raising funds for reconstruction, despite rising costs. Owner Joe Riley remains optimistic about the pub’s return and the ongoing fundraising efforts.
Moon Area's run at a PIAA Class 5A boys basketball title ended with a 59-53 quarterfinal loss to West York Friday night. Despite a furious rally in the final quarter, the Tigers fell short, finishing the season 22-6.
The Moon Area baseball team began the season with a no-hitter, defeating Archbishop Carroll 11-0. At the PIAA Swim Championships three West Hills swimmers competed and one of them -- Mimi Chamberlain of Cornell -- finished 10th overall in the 200 individual medley and Noah Pickett of Cornell placed 12th overall in the 100 butterfly.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will look to even their season record at 1-1 Saturday, March 13, when they take on Loudoun United FC in Leesburg, Va. The Hounds lost their season opener 2-1 to long-time rival Charleston Battery on March 7.
The Duquesne Dukes defeated Rhode Island, 67-61, Thursday in their Atlantic 10 tournament opener, led by Alex Williams’ 22 points. This year marks the first time Duquesne has hosted the A-10 tournament since 2016. The Dukes advanced to face No. 2 seed VCU at 5 p.m. Friday.
