Girls basketball: Montour outlasts Quaker Valley despite 44 from Thiero

Quaker Valley’s Mimi Thiero might have won the battle Saturday, but Montour will gladly accept the final result.

Thiero, the Quakers’ standout 6-foot-4 senior, poured in 44 points, but the Spartans used a balanced attack to prevail in the end, pulling out a 62-60 girls basketball victory in the Montour Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.

Montour, which was led by Claire Bannon’s 21 points, trailed 31-25 at halftime, with Thiero scoring 15 of her team’s 17 second-quarter points.

But the Spartans, which also got 15 points from freshman Reese Vojtecky and 13 from Tiffany Miller, outscored the Quakers 21-16 in the third quarter to take a 46-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

Montour slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter, building a five-point lead in the final seconds before Thiero’s 3-pointer at the buzzer accounted for the final margin of victory.

Montour coach Jordan Giles liked what she saw of her squad, which improved to 2-0.

“The girls played with a lot of grit and toughness, and played as a team,” she said after the game. “Even when down, they never gave up and kept battling until the very end.”

Giles said she was particularly proud of the way Bannon and Vojtecky stepped up Saturday.

“She made some big-time plays and big-time shots, especially in the second half,” Giles said of Bannon, who scored nine of Montour’s 16 points in the fourth quarter. “Reese also knocked down some clutch 3’s when we needed it.”
