Our Lady of the Sacred Heart used a balanced attack and some long-range sharpshooting to overpower Union, 78-53, Friday night in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball matchup at Cornell High School.
Jake Johnson scored 16 points for the Chargers, who improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in section play.
Twelve of Johnson’s points came in the first half as OLSH built a 38-28 halftime lead.
Johnson drained three 3-pointers, all of which came in the opening half and OLSH finished with eight 3-pointers on the night.
The Chargers extended their 10-point halftime lead to 20 points by outscoring the visitors 23-13 in the third quarter.
Tiernan McCullough and Austin Avsec each contributed 15 points for the winners, with McCullough collecting three 3-pointers. Lucca Grisafi added 13 points for OLSH, six of which came in the second quarter. Eight of Avsec’s 15 points came in the third quarter and Patrick Altmar contributed six in the quarter.
Montour 82, Blackhawk 42
Colton Straight connected on eight 3-point shots on the way to 32 points to spark the unbeaten Spartans to an easy win over the visiting Cougars in a Class 5A Section 4 matchup.
Ama Tening Sow contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for Montour, which improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in section play. Ryan Gamble added 10 points for the winners, who led by seven after one quarter and then extended it to 17 points at halftime by outscoring Blackhawk 23-13 in the second quarter. Straight hit five 3-pointers in the first half and finished the half with 20 points.
Justin Shannon and Logan Gabauer each scored 11 points to pace Blackhawk, which fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the section.
Chartiers Valley 60, Moon 44
Jayden Davis scored a game-high 25 points and the Colts took control in the final quarter to claim a Class 5A Section 4 win over the Tigers.
After the two teams battled to a 22-22 standoff at halftime, Chartiers Valley took a four-point lead into the final eight minutes, then outscored Moon 22-10 to win going away.
“They executed down the stretch,” Moon coach Gino Palmosina said of Chartiers Valley. “They played really patient on offense and they got everything they wanted.
“They were very well-prepared and executed at a high level, especially in the fourth quarter.”
Chartiers Valley also got 12 points from Luca Federico. Michael Santicola scored 13 points and Amir Turner added 12 for Moon, which fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the section.
Bishop Canevin 61, Washington 59
Subpar free throw shooting in the final quarter doomed the Little Prexies as the visiting Crusaders claimed a narrow win in a Class 3A Section 2 matchup.
Bishop Canevin, which improved to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the section, connected on 4 of 6 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter while Washington converted just 4 of 10 opportunities.
Washington owned a 36-31 halftime lead but Bishop Canevin’s Jackson Maddix heated up in the third quarter, scoring 11 of his 23 points to help trim the Little Prexies’ lead to 47-46 heading into the final eight minutes.
Drew Allen scored six of his 17 points in the last quarter for Bishop Canevin.
Keystone Oaks 77, Sto-Rox 66
Joseph Colton led five players in double figures with 20 points and the Golden Eagles remained unbeaten with a win over the host Vikings in the Class 3A Section 2 opener for both teams.
Keystone Oaks outscored Sto-Rox 16-9 in the first quarter and slowly added on until it owned a 60-48 lead heading into the final quarter. Bruno Onate contributed 13 points for the winners, who improved to 8-0 overall, while Tulio Watts and Carmen Pellarin each scored 12 and Ethan Spivak added 10.
Javon Nelson paced Sto-Rox, which fell to 1-4 overall, with 16 points. Marcus Thomas added 15 and Kar’e Wills contributed 12 for the Vikings.
GIRLS: Chartiers Valley 35, Moon Area 33
Emma Reynolds knifed inside to score off an inbounds play with 15 seconds left to snap a 33-33 tie and give the Colts a narrow win over the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 game.
Moon had several opportunities to tie the score in the final seconds but came away empty. Jaedin Griggs, who finished with 10 points for the Tigers, appeared to be fouled on her last-second shot, but no foul was called. Moon got the ball back on a Chartiers Valley turnover but the Tigers were whistled for a moving screen with two-tenths of a second remaining that snuffed out any hope of a miracle finish.
Rachael Boehm scored 13 points to lead Chartiers Valley, which improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in section play.
The Colts led 23-22 at halftime and had just a two-point lead heading into the final eight minutes at 28-26.
Maria Depner’s 15 points paced Moon, which fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the section.
