High school roundup: Montour baseball rallies to beat Chartiers Valley; OLSH rolls to win

Zander Stern did it in the batter’s box and on the mound Thursday to help Montour post an 8-7 come-from-behind win over host Chartiers Valley in a WPIAL non-section baseball game.

The Spartans trailed 7-2 after five innings before rallying for four runs in the sixth and then two in the seventh, and then holding off a last-inning rally by the Colts.

Stern’s two-run double was the key hit in the sixth inning but the Spartans also got an RBI double from Zachary Ciamacco, and Stern scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-6.

In the seventh, Lane Martinec singled home a run to tie the score at 7-76 and Ciamacco delivered a sacrifice fly that brought home Sal Magliocco with the game-winning run.

Stern finished with three hits and scored twice in addition to his two RBIs. Martinec also finished with three hits while Tyler Puffer had two hits and drove in a run.

Stern also came on to pitch the final inning for Montour. He hit the first batter he faced and after striking out the next hitter, he yielded a base hit that put runners at first and third. Stern then struck out the next batter and induced the last Colts hitter to pop out to second to end the game.

Dean Douglass finished a home run shy of the cycle, as he went 3 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Chargers past the host Bulldogs in a non-section game.

OLSH jumped on top with four runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Ryan DeNinno and Wyatt Walsh each singled in a run and the Chargers scored the other two runs on an error and a double play.

Douglass tripled home a run in the fifth and doubled home another run in the sixth. Bruno Williams also had an RBI single in the sixth and finished with two hits and two RBIs on the day.

Angelo Ursida worked five innings in relief of DeNinno and allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out five.

Josh Hawkins went 3 for 3, scored three runs and drove in a pair to help the host Buccaneers whip the Vikings in a non-section game that ended after 2½ innings.

Mateo Reyes, Cale Bitz and Bobby Daddea each added two hits and a pair of RBIs for Chartiers-Houstin, which scored 15 runs in the first inning and added four more in the second to put the game away.

Bishop Canevin 24, West Allegheny 18 (OT)

Lia Pilarski tossed three touchdown passes, including the winning score in overtime to Macie McClain, as the Crusaders came from behind to defeat the Indians in a Section 4 game.

Bishop Canevin trailed 12-0 and 18-6 at halftime, with Kya Cooley’s 60-yard touchdown run being the Crusaders’ only first-half score.

Cooley’s 10-yard touchdown reception from Pilarski following Gianna Mathews’ interception in the third quarter trimmed West Allegheny’s lead. Mathews picked off another pass and hauled in a touchdown pass from Pilarski to tie the game late in regulation.

Bishop Canevin stopped West Allegheny on its first overtime possession, and that set the stage for Pilarski’s winning TD toss to McClain on fourth-and-goal.
