Tyler Puffer and Caleb Armbruster combined for eight hits and 11 RBIs to power Montour to a 14-1 thumping of host McKeesport Monday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 baseball game.
The Spartans scored at least one run in each of the six innings, finishing things off with a five-run sixth inning.
Puffer doubled home a run in the first inning, singled home another run in the second and banged a two-run single in the third inning, giving Montour a 7-0 lead. He added another run-scoring single in the fifth inning to make it 9-1 before smacking a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.
Puffer finished with four hits and six RBIs. Ambruster had four hits, scored four runs and drove in five. His first-inning RBI single gave Montour a 1-0 lead, and he singled home two runs in the third to make it 7-0. He finished with a two-run single in the sixth.
Zander Stern added three hits for Montour. Matteo Weber worked five innings on the mound, giving up five hits, a walk and an unearned run while striking out 10.
Moon 5, Bethel Park 4
Savario Vandetti had two hits and drove in a run and the visiting Tigers built a 5-0 lead en route to a win over the Black Hawks in a Class 5A Section 2 contest.
Moon got an early jump on Bethel Park, scoring three times in the first inning. Two of those runs came home on an infield error, and Jayden Bittner added an RBI single.
Vandetti’s RBI base hit lengthened Moon’s lead to 4-0 in the second, and Taylor Ebner run-scoring single in the third made it 5-0.
Tyler Ebner went the distance on the mound for the Tigers, giving up five hits while walking one and striking out six. None of the four runs Tyler Ebner yielded were earned.
South Side 10, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 8
The Rams rallied from five runs down to tie the score in the fourth inning, then used a four-run fifth inning to go in front for keeps in a Class 2A Section 3 win over the visiting Chargers.
OLSH used a five-run third-inning rally to take a 6-1 lead. Dean Douglass tripled home a pair of runs and scored on a wild pitch, and Wyatt Walsh and James Hanna each contributed RBI singles in the rally.
But South Side turned the tide by scoring nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined.
The Chargers pushed across two runs in the seventh inning, with both runs scoring on fielder’s choices, but could get no closer than the final score.
OLSH outhit the Rams 13-11 with five players – Colby Lane, Angelo Ursida, Douglass, Walsh and Hanna — each finishing with two.
Apollo-Ridge 2, Carlynton 1
Alex Clawson’s RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Vikings to a Class 2A Section 3 win over the visiting Cougars.
Carlynton opened the scoring in its half of the third inning on consecutive singles by Isaac Anker and Eric Firle and Tyler Heinrich’s RBI double.
Brayden McCracken’s RBI double in the bottom of the inning tied the score at 1-1.
Anker finished with two of Carlynton’s five hits and allowed only one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
Mohawk 15, Sto-Rox 0
Vinny Pezzuolo had a pair of triples and drove in two runs as the Warriors whipped the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game that went just three innings.
Kame O’Lare added two hits and an RBI for Mohawk. Sto-Rox did not have a hit in the game.
SOFTBALL
Moon 4, Montour 1
Brooklyn Hall’s two-run double keyed a four-run fourth-inning rally that lifted the Tigers past the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Moon.
Hall and Avery Joyce each had two hits for Moon, which made the most of six hits.
Moon scored four times in the fourth inning to wipe out a 1-0 Montour lead. Alina McMahon scored the tying run on an error, and Hall followed with a two-run double to make it 3-1. Joyce then drove Hall home with a base hit.
Caylee Moser’s RBI single in the first inning had given the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Emily McClean opened the inning with a base hit and moved to second after Paige Fiedler was hit by a pitch. McClean then scored when Moser singled to left.
McClean finished with two of the five hits allowed by Moon’s Katie DeMarco, who walked two and struck out 10 in a complete-game effort.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 5, Burgettstown 2
The Chargers used a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly in the infield and an RBI single by Lizzie Smith to push across three runs in the fourth inning, and that proved to be the difference in a Class 2A Section 3 victory over the host Blue Devils.
Lauralei Kroniser drove in a run with a sacrifice in the fifth inning and Julia Pinter’s RBI single extended OLSH’s lead to 5-0.
Mya Eshenbaugh, Sydney Trippe and Kroniser each had two hits for OLSH. Sophia Wasko pitched a complete game for the Chargers, yielding eight hits and two runs while striking out three.
Chartiers-Houston 19, Carlynton 0
Lauren Rush went 3 for 3 and drove in four runs to spark the Buccaneers past the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 contest that ended after 2½ innings. Brooklyn Hess added two hits and four RBIs for Chartiers-Houston while Kiera Drilak drove in three runs. Ava Kimberling had Carlynton’s lone hit
