High school roundup: Moon’s Stepp shines at Butler; Moon, Montour, Sto-Rox post flag football wins

Moon Area sophomore Rachel Stepp continued her mastery at the annual Butler Invitational track and field meet Saturday, winning the 400 meters for the second straight year and adding a first-place finish in the 200 meters.

Stepp won the 400 last year as a freshman in 55.98 seconds and improved on that time Saturday, winning in 55.44.

Stepp also took the 200 meters with a time of 25.19. The Tigers standout is following up on a standout freshman year in which she finished fifth in the 400 meters at the PIAA Track and Field Championships.

Moon’s Alena Taylor placed fourth at the Butler Invitational in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.70. Other Tigers placing in the top 10 in the girls meet included Maria Depner, sixth in the discus; Elise Ashcroft, seventh in the 800; Ellen Senkevich, seventh in the triple jump; and Sonya Taylor, eighth in the mile and ninth in the 1,600.

On the boys side, Marcus McGill placed third in the 400 with a time of 49.61 and fourth in the 100 in 10.88. Noah Koepfer was fifth in the pole vault, Evan Senkevich placed seventh in the 100, Henrik Wright finished eighth in the pole vault and Jacob Bailey came in ninth in the long jump.


FLAG FOOTBALL

Moon Area 32, Propel Montour 0

Kendall Dydek rushed for three touchdowns Monday night and Emily Jackson threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Tigers, who improved to 7-2 overall and 7-2 in Section 4 play.

In a game played Sunday, the Tigers edged West Allegheny, 14-12. Avery Pacheco ran for one touchdown and Syd Ray hit Belly Rodrigues on scoring pass. Sarah Tatala collected her second interception of the season.


Montour 53, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0

The Spartans held the Chargers scoreless en route to a Section 4 victory. No scoring details were available for Montour.

Jules Goshen picked off a pair of passes for OLSH and returned both into Montour territory, but the Chargers were unable to convert.

Charlotte Gauntner and Layla Nichols each added one interception on defense for OLSH.


Sto-Rox 68, Propel Andrew Street 0

Rae Johnston provided solid play at quarterback and returned an interception for a touchdown to help the Vikings to an easy Section 4 win.

Viyhshaela Macon scored three touchdowns and added a pair of two-point conversions. Nynal Griffin scored three touchdowns, Rae’jah Gee added a touchdown and a two-point conversion and Kashmere Knotts contributed a two-point conversion and an interception.

Alaijah Crawley added an interception on defense for Sto-Rox, which improved to 6-2-1 with the win.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Upper St. Clair 3, Moon 0

The Panthers swept the Class 3A Section 1 match on their Senior Night, winning by set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-15.

Logan Anderson-Stewart and Ayden Anderson-Simmons paced Moon with five kills each. Anderson-Stewart and Shane Johns led the defensive effort, combining for 25 digs on the night.


GIRLS RUGBY

Moon Area 35, City Honors 0

The Tigers had little trouble in their most recent outing Sunday, blanking the Centaurs from Buffalo. No scoring details were available.


BOYS LACROSSE

Indiana 8, Moon Area 4

The Tigers put up a spirited fight but came up a goal short. Indiana established a 2-0 lead , but Moon responded with a pair of goals before halftime to tie the score at 2-2.

But Indiana pulled away in the second half to hand the Tigers their eighth loss in 10 games this season.
