Our Lady of the Sacred Heart continued its march toward a WPIAL boys soccer championship Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory over Sewickley Academy in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A tournament at Moon Area’s Tiger Stadium.
The Moon Tigers, however, saw their bid to repeat as Class 3A champions come to a halt in a 1-0 quarterfinal-round loss to Thomas Jefferson at Tiger Stadium.
Freshman Hunter Smith scored a pair of goals to help OLSH down Sewickley Academy and collect its 17th straight win without a loss this season.
The Chargers, seeded No. 2 in the Class 1A tournament, will take on the winner of Wednesday night’s Winchester Thurston-Aquinas Academy game in a semifinal match to be played at a time and date to be determined.
In its battle with Sewickley Academy, OLSH struck first with a goal from Smith, assisted by Owen Minzer, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead that stood up until halftime.
OLSH then added three more goals in the final 40 minutes to put the game away. Brady Hernandez, Smith and Grant Griesacker each scored a goal for the Chargers while Aaron Callahan, Griesacker and Hernandez picked up assists.
Moon could not break through against Thomas Jefferson, which scored the game’s lone goal with 15 minutes to play in the first half.
The Jaguars gained possession and moved deep into Moon territory where a Thomas Jefferson player split two Tiger defenders and scored from about 7 yards out.
Moon finished the season 13-6-1 a year after winning its first 25 games and claiming a WPIAL championship. The Tigers reached the PIAA title game but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Radnor.
