High schools: Bishop Canevin boys outlast McGuffey; Moon girls down Avonworth

Jackson Maddox scored a game-high 22 points to lead Bishop Canevin to a 56-41 victory over McGuffey Saturday in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball contest.

The Crusaders, now 12-7 overall and 8-0 in the section, turned a one-point first-quarter lead into a 26-20 halftime lead.

McGuffey, led by Kolt McGowan’s 15 points, shaved two points off that lead and trailed 38-34 heading into the final eight minutes.

But the Crusaders turned it on during the last quarter, outscoring McGuffey 18-7 to secure the victory.

Drew Allen added 17 points for Bishop Canevin, with six of them coming in the decisive fourth quarter.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Moon Area 44, Avonworth 26

Avery Pacheco and Maddie Wilson combined to score 25 points as the Tigers downed the Antelopes in the Win Palmer Classic, hosted by Sewickley Academy.

Moon, which improved to 7-12 overall, led 19-12 at halftime but outscored Avonworth 13-5 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Pacheco finished with 14 points for Moon and Wilson contributed 11. Juilia Nardozzi scored 11 points to lead Avonworth.
