The Montour Spartans girls basketball team, led by coach Jordan Giles, begins its season by hosting the Montour Tip Off Tournament, with games against Knoch and Quaker Valley. Sto-Rox also opens its season, competing in the Deer Lakes Tip Off Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Aaron Callahan's late goal secured a 2-1 victory for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart over Lancaster Mennonite in the PIAA boys soccer quarterfinals, completing its comeback after trailing 1-0 at halftime. OLSH will face the winner of Saturday's game between Bentworth and Winchester Thurston in the semifinals.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart faced a tough week in the WPIAL playoffs, with all fall sports teams eliminated. However, the girls cross country team excelled, securing a second-place finish at the PIAA Class 1A championship meet, just six points behind the champion.

West Hills high school football teams faced dramatic playoff debuts on Halloween. Montour fell to New Castle, 14-13, when a last-minute two-point conversion attempt failed, while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart lost 17-14 to Mohawk on a last-second field goal against. Moon triumphed 48-21 over Armstrong and Bishop Canevin beat Greensburg Central Catholic 50-35.

The Hopewell Vikings defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the WPIAL Class 2A girls volleyball semifinals, marking the third loss for OLSH against them this season. OLSH still aims for the PIAA tournament via a consolation match Thursday.

Senior running back Caden Halajcio rushed for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Montour overpowered West Allegheny, 34-13, Friday night in a key WPIAL Class 4A Parkway Conference game. Meanwhile, Moon Area and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart also posted wins while Cornell dropped a heartbreaker to Monessen.
Minor League Football Hall of Fame to welcome Montour grad Gaskins
Montour High School graduate Tom Gaskins will be inducted into the Minor League Football Hall of Fame Friday night, Oct. 24, at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Lawson played semipro ball for years in the Midwest before finally retiring at age 42.
