The 23rd annual Red, White & Blue Classic cross country meet at White Oak Park will feature nearly 100 schools, including four West Hills teams. Competitions are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6, showcasing various classes and returning runners.
The Moon Area Tigers aim to secure their third consecutive win against Penn-Trafford on Friday night, with both teams holding 2-0 records. Other local games include Montour vs. Trinity and Carlynton vs. South Allegheny. The matchups highlight strong performances, key statistics and notable player contributions from previous games.
Montour and Moon will face off in a non-section football matchup Friday at 7 p.m. after both secured close wins in their season openers. Other games include Carlynton, Cornell, Sto-Rox and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, all starting simultaneously. Bishop Canevin plays Saturday.
Carlynton's girls soccer team began the season with a scoreless tie against Trinity, showcasing strong performances by Bella D’Antonio, Riley Mauro, and Bean Eitel. Meanwhile, Montour narrowly defeated Latrobe, and Archbishop Ryan bested Moon Area.
In a thrilling WPIAL opener, Montour defeated Central Valley 27-20, with Caden Halajcio scoring the winning touchdown. Zander Stern shone with a touchdown catch and a pick-six. Other notable season openers included Moon's narrow 14-13 win, Carlynton's 20-12 victory over Carrick and OLSH's dominant 27-0 victory over Rochester.
Ryan Linn, in his ninth season as Moon Area's head football coach, feels optimistic about his veteran squad with 26 seniors, including key returners. With improved speed and athleticism, they aim for a successful start against Trinity in their season opener.
Liv DeGori led the Moon Area golf team to a 166-195 victory over Bethel Park with a score of 39, featuring two birdies. Aubrey Marasco added an eagle, finishing at 40 for the Tigers, who improved to 5-0 on the young season. Other notable scores included Angelina Schild (41) and Gabby Poeta, who achieved a personal best (46).
