Ryan Moessner scored two goals, leading Bentworth to a 3-1 win over Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) in the WPIAL Class 1A soccer championship. In WPIAL volleyball action, Waynesburg Central defeated OLSH, 3-1, in the third-place game of the WPIAL Class 2A tournament.
The Hopewell Vikings defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the WPIAL Class 2A girls volleyball semifinals, marking the third loss for OLSH against them this season. OLSH still aims for the PIAA tournament via a consolation match Thursday.
Isaac Tarbuck's header in the 72nd minute led Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 1-0 victory over Winchester Thurston in the WPIAL Class 1A semifinals, setting up a title match against Bentworth, seeking its first championship. Moon's girls fell in the Class 3A semifinals, 4-1, to South Fayette.
Both West Hills girls soccer teams were eliminated in the WPIAL Class 1A quarterfinals, with Carlynton and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart losing 2-0 to Sewickley Academy and Bentworth, respectively. In football, Bishop Canevin whipped Burgettstown, 43-10, and in hockey, Moon triumphed over Beaver 5-1.
Four West Hills high school football teams have qualified for the WPIAL playoffs, set for Halloween night. Moon Area and Bishop Canevin host their games, while Montour and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart travel for their first-round contests. Cornell missed the playoffs after a close loss to Monessen on the last night of the regular season.
Anna Palm scored late to secure a 2-1 win for Moon Area over Shaler in the WPIAL Girls Class 3A soccer quarterfinals. Moon, now 18-1, will face South Fayette in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Our Lady of Sacred Heart girls volleyball team also advanced.
