Bishop Canevin defeated Leechburg 9-5 in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 1A baseball tournament, aided by a crucial error. Nate Astor contributed three hits and three RBIs. In a Class 2A contest, OLSH fell to New Brighton. In Class 5A softball, Moon Area edged Upper St. Clair 5-4 to advance.

Four high school teams from West Hills have advanced to the WPIAL baseball playoffs. Moon Area, Montour, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, and Bishop Canevin will compete based on their section performances, with games scheduled for May 11 and 12. In WPIAL boys volleyball, both Montour and OLSH qualified for tournament play.

Moon Area’s attempt to reach the inaugural WPIAL girls flag football championship ended with a 26-13 loss to Plum in Thursday’s semifinals. The Tigers finished the season with a 12-4 record. Elsewhere, four West Hills teams will battle in the WPIAL softball tournament, which starts next week. WPIAL baseball pairings will be unveiled Friday.

Montour triumphed over Quaker Valley 14-0, fueled by Levi Gladu’s triple. In softball, Montour rallied to beat Mars Area 18-5, led by Paige Fiedler and Natalie Ciamacco.
