Girls wrestling: Moon’s Smarsh earns top seed in WPIAL Tournament

Moon Area sophomore Haley Smarsh will look to make it two straight championships at Saturday's WPIAL Girls Wrestling Individual Championships, held at North Allegheny High School. Smarsh is the top seed at 130 pounds while Montour's Kristen Walzer is seeded No. 2 in her 100-pound weight class.

High school basketball: Montour boys earn top seed in WPIAL tournament; OLSH girls earn No. 3 spot

The fields for this year's WPIAL boys and girls basketball tournaments were unveiled Monday and the Montour boys team is the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A bracket. Other boys teams competing are Moon, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Carlynton and Bishop Canevin. Local girls teams are OLSH, Moon and Bishop Canevin.

High school swimming: Carlynton splits meets with Chartiers Valley, East Allegheny

The Carlynton swim teams faced Chartiers Valley in their final section meet, with the boys losing 97-57 and the girls 95-53. Evey Fahnestock and Cate Hites excelled with multiple wins, including relays. Harry Miller led the boys with two individual victories. Both teams showcased strong performances against East Allegheny prior.

Boys basketball: Montour, Bishop Canevin finish section play as unbeaten champions

The Montour Spartans, the WPIAL's top-ranked Class 5 boys basketball team, finished its section schedule unbeaten with a win over Moon Friday night. Bishop Canevin also completed its section schedule unbeaten.

High school wrestling: Carlynton’s Sudor posts 100th victory in Cougars’ loss

Despite getting three victories by fall, Carlynton dropped a 41-24 decision to Brooke High School of West Virginia in a non-section dual wrestling meet Wednesday night. Carlynton's Braiden Sudor earned his 100th career win. In other action, Moon claimed a 35-29 victory over Butler.

Boys basketball: Carlynton clinches playoff spot; Moon, Montour, OLSH capture wins

Mikey Jenkins and Ishaga Barre scored 12 points apiece to lead Carlynton to a 61-48 victory over Washington Tuesday night in a WPIAL boys basketball game. The win gave the Cougars a berth in the WPIAL tournament. Montour, Moon and OLSH also won. (Photos)
