High school roundup: Moon girls fall in flag football semifinals; softball playoff pairings revealed

Moon Area's attempt to reach the inaugural WPIAL girls flag football championship ended with a 26-13 loss to Plum in Thursday's semifinals. The Tigers finished the season with a 12-4 record. Elsewhere, four West Hills teams will battle in the WPIAL softball tournament, which starts next week. WPIAL baseball pairings will be unveiled Friday.

Girls flag football: Moon Area opens WPIAL tournament with pair of victories

The Moon Area Tigers rolled to a pair of wins Tuesday in the inaugural WPIAL girls flag football championship playoffs, held at Montour High School's Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium. Moon defeated Keystone Oaks, 33-13, in Tuesday's tournament opener and followed with a 33-6 win over top seeded Seton LaSalle.

Montour and Moon Area schools qualified for the WPIAL Girls Flag Football playoffs, finishing with 10-3 records. The Moon Area Tigers defeated Ambridge 32-0 Wednesday in a girls flag football game, with Syd Ray throwing three touchdown passes. In boys volleyball, South Fayette beat Montour, while Butler triumphed over Moon. Moon's track team had individual successes but was eliminated in Tuesday's playoffs.

In girls rugby, Moon Area crushed State College 35-0, and PIAA champion Haley Smarsh was honored at the state Capitol.

In other games, Moon rallied to beat Upper St. Clair, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart dominated Springdale 23-3.
