High school softball: Montour, Cornell claim wins; Carlynton, OLSH, Moon come up short

Montour defeated Western Beaver 17-13, thanks to Shania Cope's four hits and five RBIs, including a home run. Cornell beat Carlynton 10-6 with Shaylee Barrett leading the way. OLSH fell 7-6 to The Ville, while Blackhawk claimed a 10-2 victory over Moon Area.

High school sports: OLSH baseball whips Steel Valley; Cornell, Montour softball fall

Thomas Medwig's three hits led Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 14-4 baseball win over Steel Valley. In softball, Thomas Jefferson defeated Montour 9-6 while Burgettstown defeated Cornell 19-3. In boys volleyball, Montour triumphed over Moon 3-2.

High school softball: OLSH cruises past Steel Valley; Bishop Canevin, Carlynton lose

Ava Ciummo's standout performance led Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 14-1 win over Steel Valley. Strong team support included Julia Pinter's doubles and multiple RBIs from several players. In other games, Northgate scored twice in the sixth inning to snap a tie and beat Bishop Canevin while South Side rallied to defeat Carlynton.

PIAA basketball: OLSH girls fall in semifinals to Shady Side Academy, 43-29

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart's pursuit of its first PIAA girls basketball championship ended Friday night with a 43-29 loss to Shady Side Academy in the Class 3A semifinals. The Chargers, despite a strong start, struggled offensively, scoring only 19 points in the last three quarters. Shady Side Academy advances to the PIAA championship game.

Spring sports roundup: Carlynton pulls out late win; OLSH falls in final inning in baseball

West Hills high school spring sports are in progress, showcasing notable performances. The Carlynton Cougars baseball team rallied for an 8-7 win over McKeesport, highlighted by pitcher Ray Filipovitz's debut. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, meanwhile, dropped a tough one Friday to Quaker Valley. Action also got underway in softball, boys tennis, boys volleyball and girls rugby.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart's girls basketball team is ready to take on Shady Side Academy at
6 p.m. Friday in a Class 3A PIAA Tournament semifinal game at Fox Chapel. OLSH Coach Don Eckerle believes having a week off will benefit his 25-4 squad.
