High school roundup: Machusko’s big day propels Moon Area past South Fayette

Nick Machusko's four hits and five RBIs propelled Moon Area to a 16-6 win over South Fayette in a WPIAL baseball game. Elsewhere in baseball, Carlynton won and Bishop Canevin came up short. Moon Area and OLSH claimed softball wins while Montour and OLSH posted volleyball victories.

Montour overcame a 12-5 deficit to defeat Union 13-12 in softball Thursday, with Alexa Richardson delivering the game-winning RBI. In other games, Moon Area trounced Mars 16-0, highlighted by Katie DeMarco's stellar pitching, while Chartiers-Houston overwhelmed Bishop Canevin 20-1. Montour and OLSH prevailed in boys volleyball and Sto-Rox rolled in flag football.

PIAA swimming: Cornell’s Chamberlain takes home medal after seventh-place finish in 100 breaststroke

Three West Hills swimmers competed at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, with Cornell's Mimi Chamberlain winning a seventh-place medal in the 100 breaststroke. Fellow Cornell swimmer Noah Pickett placed first in the 500 freestyle B final, while Evey Fahnestock did not advance past preliminaries in the 100 breaststroke.

High school roundup: Moon starts baseball season with gem; local swimmers compete at PIAA

The Moon Area baseball team began the season with a no-hitter, defeating Archbishop Carroll 11-0. At the PIAA Swim Championships three West Hills swimmers competed and one of them -- Mimi Chamberlain of Cornell -- finished 10th overall in the 200 individual medley and Noah Pickett of Cornell placed 12th overall in the 100 butterfly.

Three West Hills swimmers -- Mimi Chamberlain, Noah Pickett and Evey Fahnestock -- qualified for next week's PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Lewisburg. Competing in Class 2A, they achieved personal bests at the WPIAL meet and are now aiming for state success.

At the WPIAL Swimming Championships, West Hills swimmers Mimi Chamberlain, Noah Pickett, and Evey Fahnestock earned medals. Chamberlain secured second in the 100-yard breaststroke, Pickett fifth in the 500 freestyle and Fahnestock improved to sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
