High school softball season has begun in the West Hills, with all seven local schools participating. Caylee Moser and Hailey Herbst led Montour to a decisive 20-5 softball win over Western Beaver, contributing a combined six hits and four RBIs. Multiple players boosted Carlynton softball and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart baseball to victories in their respective games, showcasing strong performances throughout.
Nick Machusko's four hits and five RBIs propelled Moon Area to a 16-6 win over South Fayette in a WPIAL baseball game. Elsewhere in baseball, Carlynton won and Bishop Canevin came up short. Moon Area and OLSH claimed softball wins while Montour and OLSH posted volleyball victories.
Montour overcame a 12-5 deficit to defeat Union 13-12 in softball Thursday, with Alexa Richardson delivering the game-winning RBI. In other games, Moon Area trounced Mars 16-0, highlighted by Katie DeMarco's stellar pitching, while Chartiers-Houston overwhelmed Bishop Canevin 20-1. Montour and OLSH prevailed in boys volleyball and Sto-Rox rolled in flag football.
The Moon Area baseball team began the season with a no-hitter, defeating Archbishop Carroll 11-0. At the PIAA Swim Championships three West Hills swimmers competed and one of them -- Mimi Chamberlain of Cornell -- finished 10th overall in the 200 individual medley and Noah Pickett of Cornell placed 12th overall in the 100 butterfly.
Penn-Trafford defeated Moon Area, 5-3, in the WPIAL Class 3A softball tournament Monday, highlighted by a four-run second inning. Moon's season ended despite a strong performance, managing to narrow the gap to one run in the third inning.
Three West Hills high school teams are set for the WPIAL Baseball Championships, with OLSH as the No. 2 seed in Class 2A, Bishop Canevin seeded 4th in Class 1A, and Montour at No. 14 in Class 5A. Moon's girls lacrosse team is seeded No. 4 in the WPIAL tournament.
