High school roundup: WPIAL baseball, boys volleyball brackets unveiled

Four high school teams from West Hills have advanced to the WPIAL baseball playoffs. Moon Area, Montour, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, and Bishop Canevin will compete based on their section performances, with games scheduled for May 11 and 12. In WPIAL boys volleyball, both Montour and OLSH qualified for tournament play.

Moon Area's attempt to reach the inaugural WPIAL girls flag football championship ended with a 26-13 loss to Plum in Thursday's semifinals. The Tigers finished the season with a 12-4 record. Elsewhere, four West Hills teams will battle in the WPIAL softball tournament, which starts next week. WPIAL baseball pairings will be unveiled Friday.

In WPIAL high school baseball action Tuesday, Moon Area triumphed over Trinity 7-3, while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart beat Riverview 4-1. Carlynton dominated Springdale 16-1, and Shady Side Academy edged Bishop Canevin 5-3. In softball, Montour defeated Washington 15-0.

The Bishop Canevin baseball team lost 8-1 to South Allegheny Thursday, but the game raised awareness for kidney disease in support of assistant coach Tim Jones, who urgently needs a kidney transplant. The community united under special green jerseys, highlighting their support for Jones and his family. In other baseball action, Montour and Moon both won.

High school roundup: Ray throws for three TDs as Moon whips Ambridge in flag football

The Moon Area Tigers defeated Ambridge 32-0 Wednesday in a girls flag football game, with Syd Ray throwing three touchdown passes. In boys volleyball, South Fayette beat Montour, while Butler triumphed over Moon. Moon's track team had individual successes but was eliminated in Tuesday's playoffs.
