High school basketball: Host Carlynton boys, girls take tournament openers; Moon girls fall in Tigers tourney

Carlynton's boys defeated Cornell 47-35, powered by Maurice Segnonou's 12 points and Ishaga Barrie's 11, advancing to face East Allegheny. The Cougars girls team also won its tournament opener. Other West Hills winners Friday included Moon Area boys and OLSH boys.

Boys basketball: Avsec powers OLSH past Riverview in season opener

Austin Avsec led Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 66-46 boys basketball victory over Riverview Tuesday night, scoring 23 points. Jake Johnson and Nolan Reed added 14 and 11 points, respectively. In hockey, Montour shut out Hampton 4-0, with Trey Varga scoring two goals.

Girls basketball: Garner leads OLSH to season-opening win; Montour moves to 3-0

Lola Garner's 15 points led Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 43-26 victory over Beaver Area Monday night in girls basketball. Montour defeated West Mifflin 63-28, with Tiffany Miller scoring 13 points. Montour improved to 3-0.

Boys basketball: Bishop Canevin, Moon Area win; Montour falls to Allderdice

Drew Allen's 26 points helped Bishop Canevin secure a 75-67 win over Belle Vernon at the West Mifflin tournament, overcoming a first-quarter deficit. Allderdice edged Montour 42-39, with Keilyn Walden's late jumper sealing their season-opening victory amid missed free throws from the Spartans. Moon Area won its season opener, 71-46, over Imani Christian.

Girls basketball: Montour outlasts Quaker Valley despite 44 from Thiero

Montour defeated Quaker Valley 62-60 in the Tip-Off Tournament, with Claire Bannon leading the Spartans with 21 points. Despite Mimi Thiero's 44 points, Montour's teamwork and resilience secured their 2-0 record. Sto-Rox beat Propel Montour, 55-25, at the Deer Lakes Tournament.

High school basketball: Montour girls, Bishop Canevin boys win openers

The Montour Spartans decisively defeated Knoch 50-15 in their girls basketball season opener, featuring a dominant first half. Brooklyn Young scored 16 points to lead Montour. In other games, Yough defeated the Sto-Rox girls, 60-33, and Bishop Canevin beat Elizabeth-Forward 65-55 in boys game behind Drew Allen Jr.'s 22 points.
